NJ Elementary and Junior High All-State Choir Festival
Audition Information

The 2024 Audition Date has passed. Please check back in September for the 2025 Audition information.

Ensembles

  • Elementary All-State Honor Choir – Grades 4-6

  • Junior High All-State Honor Choir SATB  AND SSA– Grades 7-9 *

*New this year! The Junior High Choirs will be split into an SATB choir and an SSA choir. The split will be decided using the same method as the High School All-State Choir- Alternating acceptance into the Mixed Chorus first and the SSA Chorus second. Two equal ensembles of high quality and integrity are created by alternating acceptance. For example, the best scoring soprano and alto will be placed in the SATB group and the 2nd lowest (best) scoring soprano and alto will be placed in the SSA group.

Materials Needed for Audition

  • One mp3 recording for each student that contains the two vocalise/scales and the solo. Please note that a director can only submit 16 auditions per school/organization for each ensemble.

  • One Student Form filled out for each student which includes basic information such as:

    • Student’s name, grade, and voice part

    • Parent’s name, phone, and email

  • One Director Form filled out (on this website) which includes basic information such as:

Music Information

Each student is required to record two vocalise/scales and a recording of the solo, which this year will be (TBD). The student should be given the starting pitch, but each section of the audition should be sung unaccompanied. The starting pitch should be heard in the audition recording. There MUST be at least a one second pause between the starting pitch and singing.  Overlapping the starting pitch with the voice will result in a disqualified audition.

They should use the following script when creating their audition recording:

  • “Hello, my name is_____, I am in the ____ grade and I am auditioning for the voice part of ______. “

  • My starting pitch for my first vocalise/scale is ______.”(*Give pitch*) (*One second pause*)(SING FIRST VOCALISE/SCALE)

  • My starting pitch for my second vocalise/scale is _________.”(*Give pitch*) (*One second pause*)(SING SECOND VOCALISE/SCALE)

  • My starting pitch for “Scarborough Fair” is ______.”(*Give pitch*) (*One second pause*)(SING “Scarborough Fair”)

Each section of the audition may be recorded separately and combined into a single track on a software program such as Garageband. However, an individual section must be recorded in a single take (For example: The first vocalise cannot have an edited portion within the singing segment.  However, vocalise 1 and vocalise 2 can be recorded separately.)  Evidence of splicing or audio enhancement effects in the middle of a single singing section will result in disqualification.
